Mid-May gathering notes

Half a dozen Crescent Hill folks interested in Guatemala mission talked for an hour Monday before English language learners classes at the 1741 Crescent Avenue building. Soni reminded folks that the yard sale is only two weeks away, and Soni remains somewhat concerned about the lack of build-up of items and also volunteers. Few people have contacted her about the yard sale. The group has set $2,000 as a fund-raising goal for the 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 2 sale. Soni urged all friends of Crescent Hill Guatemala mission to push their friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers to donate items. Perry also talked about preparation for – starting Sunday, June 3, according to the church newsletter article that appeared Monday also – soliciting $10 each from Crescent Hill folks for Q’eqchi’ Bibles for women in the Estoreño churches or for lamina for the Panzos church. Folks at the meeting pointed out some typos in Perry’s materials and agreed not to stress this until Soni mentions it – and the wrap-up yard sale – when she is Elder of the week – before the June 3 service. The group talked about the upcoming month or so and then agreed on trying to bring Amanda Craft to speak after worship on Sunday, August 12, possibly moving the Guatemala mission team-led worship service to that Sunday also. The group talked about trying to work with Carlos to call Pastor Gerardo Sunday during the post-Pentecost Sunday potluck, possibly with some additional questions about how many times members of the team might be called on to preach and what women and youth and young adults of the presbytery might be looking for in workshops. Also, before the gathering, Perry promised to recalculate trip costs this week.

Participate in the trip (without going)

Through yard sale support to help fund it

This Saturday, June 2 from 8 am – 1 pm, there will be a yard sale in Fellowship Hall to raise money for the trip. Our goal is $2,000. Please come and shop and remind your friends, co-workers and family to come too. Your reminders through email and Facebook lists can really help build our shopping crowd and our profits. There will also be a Wrap-up Sale for an hour after worship on Sunday, June 3 to offer church members a last chance at half-price savings.

If you have any final items to donate you may bring them to the Fellowship Hall on Friday, June 1 from 1-9 pm. We will accept furniture, children’s toys, games, sporting goods, craft items, books, tools, and children’s and adults’ clothing items in good condition and in season. If you have questions about donation items or helping at the sale, call Soni Castleberry at 417-6481.

Through prayer

Be a prayer partner of a mission team member who will be on the trip July 7 – 15. Write two notes to the team member which will be shared with him or her during the trip and pray each day of the trip for him or her. Sign ups will be in the Narthex this Sunday, June 2 or contact Soni Castleberry at 417-6481.

Through mission projects

Provide a Bible for a woman active in a Guatemalan church or provide roofing for the Estoreño Presbytery’s newest church. Contribute $10 to buy a Q’eqhchi’ Bible for a woman from one of the 11 Estoreño Presbytery churches or $10 to buy a lamina for a new roof for the new Estoreño Presbytery church in Panzos. Write a check to CHPC with “Guatemala Bible” or “Guatemala lamina” written on the memo line and deposit it in the offering plate on Sunday, June 3; Sunday, June 10; or Sunday, June 17; or give cash or a check to the person at the table in Narthex on June 3, June 10, or June 17. Our Estoreño Presbytery partners have asked for Bibles for 10 women from each of the 11 churches and for 24 lamina to create a roof for the Panzos church. We challenge each of you to give $10 for one or the other of the projects. If everyone gives $10, we’ll be able to give all the women Bibles and obtain enough materials for the roof.

Through transportation and conversation

Be part of the send off or welcome back and participate in last-minute pre-trip discussions or first-impression debriefing about the trip. Help drive mission team members from Crescent Hill church to the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky airport at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7 or from the Cincinnati airport back to Louisville at 5: p.m. on Sunday, July 15. Sign up at a table in the Narthex, this Sunday, June 2, or contact Perry Chang at 457-7833.

Through attendance at preparation meetings

Join mission team members on Wednesday, June 13, 5:30-7 pm, for a training session with Waiting for Lilith theatre members to learn how to use theatrical and storytelling techniques when working with others with different cultures and languages. Also feel free to attend the final planning meeting on Sunday, June 24 right after worship for last minute details for the trip.

Both meetings will be held at CHPC. Call Soni Castleberry, 417-6481, for more information.

Through commissioning

Be part of Crescent Hill’s July 1 Sunday morning worship service and help commission the 12 members of the church’s July 2012 Guatemala mission team.

Team gathering notes

Derby Sunday night all but two or three of the summer 2012 Guatemala mission team gathered in Fireside Room to get to know each other a little more and brainstorm about the mission trip. Ginny, Doug, Douglas, Luiz, Perry, Peter, Seth, Soni, and Stephanie were there. The group decided to leave Saturday morning (July 7) from the Cincinnati airport, to try to go to some outlying churches but also to go to Tikal, and to try to facilitate four workshops, including one with children. Workshop planning and fundraising responsibilities were discussed, along with the schedule of activities leading up to the trip. Soni shared some of the observations she wrote down during the first trip, and all members of the team shared aspirations and concerns about the trip. Next up is the Guatemala mission task force gathering (which will likely include some people from the team), at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 21, at 1741 Frankfort Avenue, and the lead-up to the Saturday, June 2 yard sale.
