What's up with the partnership?

Coming up very soon – Saturday, August 10 – is the St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic held next to our church parking lot. This is a great opportunity for us to earn money for the Guatemala Partnership by renting space to folks who attend the picnic. Could you donate a couple of hours that day to help direct cars and collect money to support this mission of our church? Shifts are from 4:00-6:00pm, 6:00-8:00 pm and 8:00-10:00 pm. Contact Perry Chang at 457-7833 or perrydchang@gmail.com to sign up for a shift.

The church budget allocates $1,000 per year to the Guatemala Partnership. This year these funds support theological training for our partners as well as help pay the communication expenses, mainly internet, to enhance better contact with each other. Money for anything else we want to support, or help with general expenses for future trips, must be done through fundraising efforts.

On Saturday, July 13, Soni Castleberry and Hilda Zuniga hosted the planning group at their home. Perry Chang chaired the meeting. Other participants included Stephanie Gregory, Lowell and Janine Linder, Doug Yeager and Gayle Trautwein.

Soni reported that $1,331.93 was raised at the June 30 yard sale. Not bad, since we had not planned for a yard sale this year and put this one together quickly in order to be a part of the Frankfort Avenue Business Association’s neighborhood-wide sale and Food Truck event at St. Joseph’s.  A few leftover items were put on consignment and several vehicle loads were taken to Goodwill, Presbyterian Community Center and Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store. Kentucky Refugee Ministry collected the rest.

Looking toward Fall, we talked about how to involve the broader congregation in the Partnership work. We are eager to find ways for others to get to know about our partners and how we try to support each other. One idea was to include photos and information about individual partners in this newsletter or the church blog. Another suggestion was to get “scrapbookers” or “wannabes” to help put together albums from the three big trips we’ve taken to Guatemala, a couple of smaller trips and the 2011 trip when we brought three of our partners to Louisville for a visit. Do either of these ideas sound like ways that might help draw you into more awareness and possibly involvement in this mission? Do you have some other, even better, ideas? If so, contact Soni Castleberry at 417-6481 or soni.castleberry@gmail.com or talk to one of the folks listed above.

A definite date is not yet set for our next meeting. Watch for details.

-Soni
